Hometown Initiative event set for Oct. 18
THE COURIER-JOURNAL • OCTOBER 2, 2008
The Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Initiative is offering area residents a chance to get some outdoor exercise while staying close to home.
A hike is scheduled Oct. 18 in Jefferson Memorial Forest in connection with the initiative, which is designed to promote better nutrition and increased physical activity.
“The hike allows folks to enjoy the beauty of one of our outstanding natural attractions, the Jefferson Memorial Forest,” Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson said.
“Hiking is an excellent way to exercise, especially with a group, because it doesn’t require any special abilities or equipment. This is an event that is accessible to all skill and fitness levels.”
The forest, which has more than 6,000 acres, has 35 miles of marked hiking trails.
The Healthy Hometown event will begin at 10 a.m., with hiking getting under way at 11 in the forest’s Horine Section.
People will be encouraged to use any of five trails, which have varying terrain and range in length from one-fifth of a mile to five miles.
Stroller- and wheelchair-accessible trails also are available.
Metro Parks crews have been working to clear the Horine section of debris after the Sept. 14 windstorm, so hiking conditions should be favorable, Metro Parks officials said.
Forest officials will guide a number of hikes, including some for children, and will describe forest features. All hikers will be given maps that identify the trails.
Before and after the hike, there will be children’s activities, hayrides, music and information booths that will provide tips on hiking safety, trail etiquette and healthy-living information.
